Leaders from Australia’s health ecosystem came together yesterday to participate in a panel discussion at the One Health Symposium in Canberra.

The broad-ranging conversation highlighted the enthusiasm among government, industry and the community to collaborate more and strengthen Australia’s disease prevention and preparedness levels.

The panellists included:

  • Dr Beth Cookson, Chief Veterinary Officer
  • Dr Bertie Hennecke, Chief Environment and Biosecurity Officer
  • Dr Gabrielle Vivian-Smith, Chief Plant Protection Officer (via video)
  • Sean Starmer, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade senior official
  • Carita Davis, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing senior official.

Together, they explored how a unified One Health approach can help address shared challenges such as zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance and climate-related health threats.

The panel also discussed the drivers of change required to fully embed a One Health approach, what a successful One Health implementation would look like and pandemic preparedness.

The One Health Symposium continues today with workshops and presentations from researchers, policymakers and community leaders working to build a healthier, more resilient Australia.
