We’ve released new climate risk assessment and adaptation planning guidance to help health system organisations manage climate-related risks.

Climate change is having significant impacts on human health and health systems. Extreme heat, fires and floods are increasing demand for care while placing pressure on infrastructure, health services and workforce capacity.

To help health services respond to these challenges, we have released new climate risk assessment and adaptation planning guidance for:

  • Local Health Networks
  • Primary Health Networks
  • hospitals
  • residential aged care services
  • state and territory health departments
  • Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Services
  • other primary and secondary care points like general practice, and allied health and psychology services.

The guidance provides health organisations the tools they need to identify, understand and manage climate-related risks within their services. It includes:

  • a manual
  • local climate and health hazard data
  • practical planning templates.

These resources are designed to help services prepare for climate change and support ongoing service delivery. They help organisations assess climate‑related health and service risks and plan practical adaptation actions to manage them.

We developed these materials in collaboration with partners across Australia, including health system representatives, government agencies and subject-matter experts, strengthening our role as a trusted leader in health-climate risk management.

This guidance delivers a key commitment under the National Health and Climate Strategy, and was released by the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care.
