Description:

This report investigates the development and uptake of new methods to replace animal use in regulatory testing of industrial chemicals. It:

  • examines existing practical examples, as well as emerging techniques, for testing chemicals without the use of animals across relevant sectors (cosmetics and other industrial chemicals)
  • identifies best practices and innovative approaches.

The scope of the report is limited to industrial chemicals and does not extend to pharmaceuticals or medical testing.

The report includes a targeted review of the scientific literature on alternatives to animal testing.

This is not a systematic review of every testing method and approach, but provides:

  •  an overview of trends in the development and use of non-animal methodologies
  • a scan of how these methods are being accommodated in chemical regulatory frameworks in Australia and internationally.
