Every person who has been diagnosed with MERS has lived in, travelled to, or been linked to a case from the Middle East.
If you are planning to visit the region to perform Hajj (4 to 9 June 2025), work or sightsee, reduce your risk of getting MERS by:
- avoiding contact with camels
- avoiding contact with infected people
- avoiding raw, undercooked or unpasteurised camel products, including meat and milk
- washing your hands regularly with soap and water, particularly before eating or after touching animals.
When you or your family get back home, you can also help avoid becoming seriously unwell by knowing the signs and symptoms of MERS.
These include:
- fever
- coughing
- difficulty breathing
- muscle pains
- diarrhoea
- vomiting and nausea.
If you are concerned about MERS symptoms, speak to your health professional as soon as possible.
