Role
The NCC aims to:
- regularly review Australia’s acute flaccid paralysis and polio surveillance and polio immunisation activities
- advise on requirements to sustain certification quality standards
- update the Regional Certification Commission annually on whether
- surveillance is adequate to detect and respond to potential importations of polio
- immunity levels against polio are high enough to protect the community
- there is evidence of poliovirus circulation in Australia
- review whether Australia meets the requirements for poliovirus containment
- inform the Western Pacific Regional Office secretariat whether there are any obstacles to maintaining polio-free status in Australia.

Meetings
The NCC meets formally biannually, once face-to-face and once by teleconference.
Related committees or groups
The NCC works closely with the Polio Expert Panel (PEP) and the Australian National Authority for Containment (NAC) on national poliomyelitis and poliovirus-related matters.
When there is a suspected case of poliomyelitis or environmental detection of a non-vaccine poliovirus in Australia a joint extraordinary meeting of these partners is convened.
